Miles · Last updated September 29, 2026
Miles is an iPhone app where Miles, a red panda, takes your notes during class while your distracting apps stay locked (we call that Class Mode). This policy explains what the app collects, why, who helps us process it, and how to delete it. It's run by German Del Rio, reachable at chemindelrio@gmail.com.
No account, no email
Miles doesn't ask for your email, a password or a social login. The first time you open it, it creates an anonymous account identified only by a random ID. Your first name, if you give it, stays on your phone and is never uploaded.
What we collect and why
| Class audio | Only while Class Mode is on. The app records the class in pieces of about 30 seconds and turns each piece into text on the phone, so the audio doesn't leave it. If that fails for a piece (for example, while the language is still downloading), that piece is uploaded to be turned into text. We don't keep the audio: it's discarded once transcribed, and the phone deletes each piece as soon as it has its text. |
| Transcripts and notes | The text of each class, the notes Miles writes from it, and the questions you ask Miles with his answers, so you can read them later. |
| Your schedule | The classes you add: names, days, times, rooms and professors. If you import a photo of your schedule, the photo is sent to be read and is not stored. |
| Onboarding answers | Your school level, field of study, goals, what makes class hard for you, how often you check your phone, and how strict you want Miles to be. We use them to write notes that fit you and to understand how people use the app. |
| Usage | Events like starting or ending a class, opening or exporting your notes, asking a question, or how many times you tried to open a locked app during class (a count, never which app), with the time they happened. Also your answers to the occasional one-tap question in the app. We use them to improve Miles. A few of them also go to Meta to measure our ads (see "Ads we run"). |
| Subscription | Your purchase and subscription status, from Apple, through RevenueCat. We never see your payment details. |
What stays on your phone
- Which apps you lock. Apple's Screen Time keeps your choices on the device and doesn't show them to the app, not even their names.
- Your first name and your settings.
- Class audio. It's transcribed on the phone and deleted; a piece that has to be transcribed on our server stays only until it uploads.
Who helps us
These providers help us run Miles:
- Supabase stores your data and runs our servers.
- OpenAI writes your notes, answers your questions to Miles and reads schedule photos.
- Groq turns a piece of class audio into text when the phone couldn't, with OpenAI as a backup.
- Anthropic (Claude) writes notes, answers questions and reads schedule photos when OpenAI is unavailable.
- PostHog stores usage events for our product analytics, without your location.
- Meta measures which of our Instagram and Facebook ads bring people to Miles.
- RevenueCat and Apple handle subscriptions.
- Expo delivers app updates.
Under their terms for developers, OpenAI and Anthropic don't train their models on the data we send them, and Groq doesn't store it. We don't sell your data.
Ads we run
We advertise Miles on Instagram and Facebook, and use Meta's SDK to learn which ads work. It tells Meta when the app is installed and opened, when you finish the first questions, and when you start a trial or a subscription, along with the anonymous ID, your device model and iOS version, and your IP address. Never your notes, your classes or what you ask Miles.
After you subscribe, iOS asks whether Miles may track you. If you allow it, Meta also gets your device's advertising identifier and can match these events with your activity on Meta to measure our ads. If you ask Miles not to track, Meta doesn't get that identifier and uses the events only for aggregated ad measurement. You can change your answer anytime in Settings › Privacy & Security › Tracking.
How long we keep it
We keep your transcripts, notes, schedule and answers while you use Miles, so your notes are there when you need them. You can delete everything at any time.
Deleting your data
In the app, go to Profile › Delete my data. It deletes your account and everything linked to it from our servers, and erases what the app kept on your phone. Your subscription belongs to your Apple ID: to cancel it, go to Settings › Apple ID › Subscriptions. You can also email us and we'll help.
Recording in class
Rules about recording lectures depend on your school and where you live. Check with your professor if you're not sure it's allowed.
Children
Miles is not meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above, and tell you in the app if the change is important.
